Negatives are Stored by Vladyslav Krasnoshchok. Riot Book, 2014. |
"Vladyslav Krasnoshchok belongs to the new generation of Kharkov Photo school. He is a member of the 'SHILO' group which was nominated for 'Best First Book' at Paris Photo with the book Euromaidan (out of print). The new book Negatives Are Stored is published in 100 numbered and signed copies and was also presented in Paris.
53 vintage photographs from original hand painted old cabinet and visit portraits are stored in a wooden box. Today when many photographers work with the archive his work is characterized by a special style that is associated to the Kharkov tradition, for example Boris Mikhailov’s series Lurik. Krasnoshchok prepares the photos roughly, connected both to post-modernism and Soviet history and aesthetics. On all the photos the text 'negatives are stored' is written and if somewhere there are any negatives you could 'play' with the pictures, try to imagine what actually happened to all these people, in real life and in Krasnoshchok’s dream world. Sometimes you can’t even recognize the original picture, it could still be left in a family album without changing. But now they became new pictures and new stories and somewhere the negatives are stored.
With great joy I notice that Kharkov once again puts Ukrainian photography in focus on the international scene."—Misha Pedan
